Hopefully this will become really good news soon. A bill to allow hemp to be grown in Kentucky has passed the state legislature, is awaiting the governor's signature and Rand Paul says he will petition the Obama administration to give a waiver to allow the farming to begin.
The pressure on Obama and Holder to not grant the waiver may be great. It could open up the flood gates for other states to want the same so I don't look for it to happen anytime soon although I would love to be wrong.
Hemp seed and their products have been called the most perfect, most nutrient condensed food the world has ever known and that's hard to argue against. I've been eating hemp seed regularly for the last year or so. Drinking some hemp milk too. The dogs like them just as much as I do. Am I better off in using these supplements? I suppose time will tell. The major problem is cost and the fact that whole hemp seed from Canada have been heat treated to prevent germination and that degrades the nutritional qualities, especially the oil. Hemp hearts, shelled hemp seeds, do not have to undergo the process but they are expensive, somewhere around a dollar an ounce in small quantities from local stores. Legalization should bring the price down considerably.
As good as hemp seed is as an addition to a good regular diet it is also known as a famine food and there is a chance it could one day be needed as a basic food in our country. In a food emergency, one could survive on hemp seed alone.
In 1937, Ralph Loziers, general counsel of the National Institute of Oilseed Products, told the Congressional committee studying marijuana prohibition that “hempseed… is used in all the Oriental nations and also in a part of Russia as food. It is grown in their fields and used as oatmeal. Millions of people every day are using hempseed in the Orient as food. They have been doing this for many generations, especially in periods of famine.”Another threat to hemp is the very real possibility that companies like Monsanto would want to get their grubby little genetically engineering hands on control of the seed market. Seed in the US initally would most likely follow Canada's lead of government intervention.
That was over 70 years ago. Today we know hempseed is the plant kingdom’s richest source of life-giving essential fatty acids, and may well be the cure for cancer and heart disease.
Of the 3-million plus edible plants that grow on Earth, no other single plant source can compare with the nutritional value of hempseeds. Both the complete protein and the essential oils contained in hempseeds are in ideal ratios for human nutrition. Only soybeans contain a higher percentage of protein. However, the composition of the protein in hempseed is unique in the vegetable kingdom. Sixty-five percent of the protein content in hempseed is in the form of globulin edestin.1 (The word “edestin” comes from the Greek “edestos,” meaning edible.) More
Because hemp is classified taxonomically as Cannabis sativa, Canada’s hemp production is regulated by Health Canada. Producers and manufacturers who want to work with hemp must obtain licenses from Health Canada in Ottawa. This is not the approach we need and here may be why...
In order to grow hemp or manufacturer hemp products you must have a license.
Producers are only allowed to plant certified seed – there is no “common” seed. All hemp planted must be an approved variety, all of which have less than 0.3% THC in them in field.
It is a requirement of Industrial Hemp Regulations that all commercial hemp crops be planted using only Certified Seed. Seed saving and the use of Common Seed are currently NOT allowed under current regulations. Seed Merchants must provide valid Certified Seed Tags to Farmers: Farmers and Processors must be able to provide valid Certified Seed Tags to Inspectors on request. Keeping good records on seed sure helps protect quality in the hemp industry, acting as a check against the emergence of less than desirable genetic traits, such as THC content, population of males and the protection of valued genetic ones, such as oil, protein, and EFA content. Some wild seed, wildseed is what we need.
When understanding the practical compatibility of hemp as an energy source, it is important to understand the reality of the seed. The wildseed, the natural seed produced by nature is vital to the efficient use and productivity of hemp as an alternative energy, whether it is for fuel, food, shelter, paper, cloth, or medicine.
Currently accepted industrial hemp standards are set at 0.3 % THC content, which is a genetically engineered standard that lowers and limits the productivity of hemp as an energy source. Wildseed hemp has about 3% THC content which produces much more seed and fibers for production. As a plant it also is helpful to producing more healthy oxygen for the air quality. That's a big difference in yield just to keep the THC content low. Think about the advancements marijuana breeders have made over the last 30 years. Hemp farmers and cross breeders would follow the same route, if allowed, to increase quality and yield and save seed from year to year.
The potential of hemp in any and all uses is in the quality of the seed.
According to a study published in the Notre Dame University journal, The American Midland Naturalist, wild hemp here in the USA produces 8,500 pounds of seed per acre.
Low THC hemp allowed in Europe and Canada only makes 600 to 1200 pounds of seed More
Besides all of the other uses, over 8,000 pounds of seed per acre would feed a lot of people and keep them healthy too. This flies in the face of dead food corporations and their brothers against humanity, big medicine and big pharma.
The war against food affects all of us more and more each day. Affordable organic hemp, legal in every state, would be an important step in reversing the direction we are going. One battle at a time. Tell your friends. Hemp seed is not just for the birds.
